We must begin with an understanding of how and why temporary signs are necessary for businesses, residents, and nearby facilities before discussing the proper measures in regulating signs. Signs are mandatory to provide effective wayfinding in our communities. This is clearly seen, as signage is everywhere, conflict arises when discussing extreme signage or preventing signs that divert away from the community atmosphere.
One “bad” sign can leave a large impact, including numerous opinions about signage generally speaking. It’s not out of ordinary that a negative reaction to temporary signs is actually aimed at illegal signs not used by local businesses. Illegal signs commonly trigger conversations prohibiting or severely restricting signs. As a result, this can increasingly impact local businesses and residents who may refuse to advertise a garage sale or local events, due to all of the heavy restrictions.
While half of communities stated they regulate temporary signs for business promotion, an immense amount of survey respondents said communities regulated temporary signs for safety and aesthetics. In reviewing the laws, no pure division detached communities that regulate temporary signs for business promotion versus those that do not. Some communities who claimed they were regulated for business promotion did not clearly allow more temporary signage and even had temporary sign regulations that were far more restrictive than the vast majority of other rules. The only correlation seems to be the support of businesses and economic development was a stated purpose to the overall sign regulations.
Nevertheless, there is a strong association between temporary sign guidelines and the capability of businesses to advertise. There’s plenty of increasing evidence that proves the value of signage to both businesses and communities, and that this value also applies to the use of temporary signs.
